Presidents knock off Titans to solidify spot in PAC Tournament

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College's men's tennis team cruised to a swift 8-1 victory over the Westminster Titans this Thursday evening in a Presidents' Athletic Conference match at the Janet Swanson Tennis Center.

The victory for the Presidents snaps a three-game losing streak in the head-to-head series with the Titans.

W&J claimed all three doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead over Westminster.

Sophomores Jackson Akers (Logan, W. Va. / Logan) and Alex Duing (South Park, Pa. / South Park) beat Noah Sofran and Colin Bork by an 8-1 score at first doubles.

At third doubles, Nate Clarke (New Kensington, Pa. / Valley) and Connor Simms (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillan) achieved an 8-3 victory to mark the duo's fourth victory as doubles partners.

Abhinav Yarramaneni (Mountainview, Calif. / Los Altos) and Nick Bussard (New Kensington, Pa. / Valley) walked away with an 8-6 win at seconds double in the closest match of doubles play.

The Red & Black took five of the six singles points of the day in straight set victories.

Clarke and Simms both claimed victories at singles four and six with respective scores of 6-1, 6-0.

Bussard (6-1, 6-2), Akers (6-4, 6-4), and Yarramaneni (6-3, 6-3) also picked up singles wins to help the Presidents maintain their lead over the Titans.

Washington & Jefferson finishes the regular season currently ranked fifth in the Presidents' Athletic Conference with a split 4-4 conference record and 7-9 overall record.

The win qualifies the Presidents for the PAC Championship Tournament for the first time since the 2020-21 season. The Presidents return to action with the quarterfinals on Tuesday, April 23, with location and opponent to be announced.
