NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College women's lacrosse team earned a wire-to-wire victory over the Westminster Titans in Presidents' Athletic Conference play Wednesday evening at the UPMC Sports Complex.
The win is the seventh-straight for the Presidents, who improve to 7-6 overall and 6-0 in the conference. The loss drops Westminster to 2-4 in the conference and 3-9 overall.
The Presidents build a 9-1 lead after the opening quarter of play. The Presidents ripped off six-straight scores to start the game, which included a pair of goals by
Caleigh Bogats (Oakdale, Pa./Chartiers Valley). Following a Westminster goal at the 8:20 mark which broke up the string,
Mya Bolinda (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) scored consecutive goals to help W&J build upon its lead.
Four different Presidents found the back of the net in the second quarter as the Red and Black extended the lead to 13-4 at halftime.
Anna Kloehn (Canton, Ohio/Jackson) scored twice in the third to secure another hat trick. A goal by Kloehn at the 3:19 mark of the third swelled the lead to double digits at 16-6.
The game was called following the third quarter with storms surrounding the local area.
W&J held advantages in shots (31-14, clears (15-13), ground balls (17-10) and draw controls (17-8).
Kloehn led the Presidents with three goals. This marks the seventh-straight game that Kloehn has recorded at least three goals.
Bolinda finished with four points (two goals, two assists) to go along with two ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Jenkins tallied four points and five draw controls.
Emily Heck (Reading, Pa./Berks Catholic) finished with three points and a team-high six draw controls.
Ella Holland (Healdsburg, Calif./Cardinal Newman),
Aisa Uhler (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) and
Brynne Stewart (Painesville, Ohio/Andrew Osborne Academy) also had two goals apiece as the W&J offense put together a balanced display.
Sammy Hartz (Ijamsville, Md./Oakdale) had a team-high four ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Kaitlyn Brown (Charlotte Hall, Md./La Plata) made three saves to pick up the victory.
W&J returns to action on Saturday, April 20 with a home contest versus Waynesburg. The Presidents will honor the life and legacy of Brittney (Oake) Upman '12 in conjunction with the game. Brittney, one of WJWL's most decorated players, tragically lost her life earlier this year after a courageous battle with Leptomeningeal Carcinoma. Game time is scheduled for 12 p.m.
