WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College volleyball team extends their win streak to six straight after completing the 3-0 sweep of the Mount Aloysius Mounties (27-25, 25-22, 25-21).
The win uplifts W&J to 9-7 seven on the season prior to Presidents' Athletic Conference play. The team started the season 0-6 but managed to flip the season on its head, going 9-1 since their loss to John Carroll.
The Presidents opened the bout with the Mounties down 4-0 early on. Fighting back, W&J managed to even the score before falling behind again 16-13. Beyonce Piercé (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) logged a crucial kill to spark a 6-0 run to take a three-point lead, 19-16. The Mounties worked back to knot the score at 25 before kills by
Sophie Little (Marysville, Ohio/Fairbanks) and
Alyssa Trn (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg Area) logged two kills to close the first set in favor of the Presidents.
The second set took a balanced approach as both teams traded point streaks. W&J was gifted a 22-21 lead after a service error by Mount Aloysius, leading to a batch of kills by
Jaden Blough (Meyersdale, Pa./Meyersdale) and
Piper McFarland (West Mifflin, Pa./Cornerstone Preparatory Academy). W&J again relied on a service error from the opposing side to close out the second set, 25-22.
Entering the third set, both teams remained in a back-and-fourth battle until W&J pulled away with a 6-1 point swing in the later portion of the set. The Presidents built a 24-19 lead before the Mounties sprung the making of a comeback logging two quick points. W&J managed to end the attempt with a kill from setter
Brielle Moorhouse (East Liberty, Ohio/Benjamin Logan) that ended the bout, 25-21.
Little led the team in kills with 18, also contributing seven digs and three total blocks.
Adrianna Sacramento (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) and Moorhouse collectively tallied 37 assists with 21 being credited to Sacramento and 17 to Moorhouse. Sacramento also logged a flurry of service aces in the second set.
Defensively, McFarland led the team with 30 digs followed by
Rian Benz (Strongsville, Ohio/Holy Name) with 16. At Libero, McFarland was also able to contribute offensively with three kills on five attacks.
W&J returns to their home court this Friday in an evening matchup with Baldwin Wallace, Friday (Sept. 27). Opening serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
