Brackney Nets Presidents Lone Goal in Homecoming Game

WASHINGTON, Pa. – Despite late goal by sophomore Megan Brackney (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) the Washington & Jefferson women's field hockey team fell to the visiting Wittenberg Tigers this afternoon at Cameron Stadium, 2-1.

W&J drops to 1-6 on the season and 1-2 in conference play. Wittenberg maintains an unblemished record, improving to 4-0 and 1-0 in NCAC play.

Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the first thirty minutes of play. Wittenberg controlled possessions in the first half, firing five shots in the first quarter followed by 4 in the second. W&J put up 1 shot in the first quarter and did not tally another until the second half of play.

The Tigers found their first goal nine minutes into the third quarter. Despite two shots from the Presidents following the Wittenberg goal, the score settled at 1-0 heading into the final 15 minutes of play.

Wittenberg tallied their second goal in the third minute of the final quarter, giving themselves a 2-0 leg up.

The Presidents found their opportunity in the 51st minute of play to push the ball past the Tigers goalie. Brackney netted the ball off a pass from junior Lily Giering (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) to lessen the Wittenberg lead, 2-1.

The rally was short lived as the Tigers gained and held possession for the remainder of the contest securing the 2-1 victory over the Presidents.

Wittenberg was efficient offensively throughout the match as the Tigers outshot the Presidents 21-6, however both teams earned seven penalty corners. Six Presidents dialed up a shot each in the outing with each being on goal.

Freshman goalkeeper Grace Erhard (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) knocked down four shots on goal in her 60 minutes of play.

The Presidents return to Cameron Stadium tomorrow in a rapid turnaround as they take on Transylvania this Sunday (Sept. 29). The matchup has a scheduled start time of 12:00 p.m.
