WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson field hockey team hosted the Transylvania Pioneers and were upended 1-0.
W&J falls to 1-7 on the season overall, and 1-3 in conference. The Presidents have lost two straight conference matchups.
The Pioneers got on the board early in the matchup, netting the game winner three minutes into regulation. The Transylvania goal was set up by a corner to net the first score of the bout. The Presidents would respond with seven corner opportunities and four shots to close out the first quarter.
The second quarter saw a more aggressive approach from both sides, as the Pioneers picked up three green cards and the Presidents added one. W&J nor Transylvania could capitalize on the power play opportunities prior to the close of the half.
Both sides kicked off the second half with the same aggression, as the Pioneers picked up a yellow card and two additional green cards. W&J was held at bay in the third with only two penalty corners that generated one shot.
With minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, the Presidents mounted spurts of offensive production. W&J created three corner chances as the clock ticked down to the final seconds, recording last-ditch effort shots by
Lily Giering (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) and
Emily Bloom (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford), to no avail.
Giering led the team with three shots followed by
Lindsey Blount (Lockport, N.Y./Starpoint) who launched two.
Grace Erhard (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) recorded all 60 minutes of work in goal, compiling three saves.
The Presidents return to Cameron Stadium next Saturday (Oct. 5) for a matchup with Wooster. The Presidents Pink Game has a scheduled start time of 12 p.m.
