Late Scoring Gives Women’s Soccer First Draw of the Season Against Marietta

MARIETTA, Ohio – The Washington & Jefferson Women's Soccer team played to a late-scoring, 1-1 draw against the Marietta Pioneers in midweek non-conference action.

The draw settles both teams to a 0-1-1 record overall on the season so far.

W&J launched seven towards the Marietta goal (four on goal) while the Pioneers sent nine shots of their own, three of which made their way into the arms of the Presidents sophomore goalkeeper Molly Schoch (Burgettstown, Pa./Burgettstown). Both teams were held at bay in the opening period and headed into the second half with no tallies in the scoring column.

Kendell Obley (Buena Vista, Pa./McKeesport) would net the first goal of the game and only goal for the Presidents in the 68th minute of play. Obley's first goal of the season and eighth in her career was set up by a pass from senior defenseman Courtney Actis (Bechtelsville, Pa./Boyertown Area).

W&J held the single goal lead for almost 10 minutes before the Pioneers were able to sneak in a goal of their own tie things up at the eventual final score of 1-1.

The Presidents' goal came from just one of four shots on goal and five shots total in the second half. Marietta put up a staggering 26 shot attempts in the second period, scoring on one of eight that were on target.

Audrey Chapman (Elkins Park, Pa./Phil-Mont Christian Academy) led the way in shots for the Red & Black with five total and four on goal. Sydney Hoover (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township), Dove Corrette-Bennett (New Castle, Pa./Neshannock), Maura Heberle (Hookstown, Pa. South Side Beaver) and Obley were the only other Presidents to register a shot on goal.

Schoch recorded all 90 minutes in the net for W&J with 10 total saves on the outing.

W&J returns to action when it hosts La Roche for a non-conference match up on Friday (Sept. 6). Start time is slated for 7 p.m.
