Five Presidents Score in Successful 5-1 Outcome Over La Roche

WASHINGTON, Pa. – A second half spark propelled the Washington & Jefferson Women's Soccer team to a 5-1 victory over La Roche University Friday night at Alexandre stadium for their first of the season.

The Presidents improve to 1-1-1 on the season overall while the Redhawks drop to a 1-2-0 mark overall.

Despite seven shots from W&J and three from La Roche, the game remained a stalemate after 45 minutes of play.

The offensive Red & Black wave was quick and formidable as W&J scored five straight goals. Selah Calacan (Waldorf, Md./North Point) led the charge scoring the first goal a minute and thirty-four seconds into the half on an assist from last season's highest goal scorer, Skylar Bibbee (Fairfax, Va./Chantilly).

Freshman Alexa Taylor(Aliquippa, Pa./Olsh) and Camille Smith(Canton, Ohio/Lake) would tally on the next two for the Presidents, as they found the back of the net for their first collegiate goals which bumped the score up to 3-0 in W&J's favor.

Maura Heberle (Hookstown, Pa./South Side Beaver) tacked on the fourth score at the 62:12 mark with an unassisted goal that was tucked away neatly in the lower left-hand corner after the goalie rushed at Heberle in an attempt to stop another scoring chance for the home team to no avail.

Senior Sydney Snyder (Loudonville, Ohio/Loudonville) also tallied her first collegiate goal on what would be the final goal of the outing for the Presidents during the 64th minute of play, giving W&J a commanding 5-0 lead.

La Roche would muster up a lone goal on a free kick in the 85th minute at midfield that had just the right bounce to bloop in on a hop just below the crossbar.

W&J out-shot the Redhawks by a 20-7 margin and registered 12 shots on goal. Only three of La Roche's attempts were on target. The Presidents also had the only four corner kicks of the game.

W&J will look to carry this energy as they travel to Carlow on Tuesday (Sept. 10) for a nonconference matchup. The bout is slated to begin at 6:30 p.m.
