HIRAM, Ohio – First collegiate goals from Antonio Romero (Bowie, Md./Bowie) and Logen Mackey (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) helped guide the Washington & Jefferson Men's Soccer team over the Hiram Terriers to claim their first win of the season this evening on the road, 2-1.
The Presidents got things rolling with a speedy first goal occurring in just the sixth minute of play. Mackey was able to find the back of the net for his first collegiate goal off of an assist from last year's top scorer, Jimmy Gogol (Westminster, Md./Westminster).
W&J would record a much-needed insurance goal in the final minutes of the first 45-minute half. The Presidents scored their final point on a goal by Romero who was assisted by sophomore forward Justin Parker Wyatt (Coatesville, Pa./Unionville) to give W&J a 2-0 edge over the Terriers before the end of the first half of play.
Despite the Terriers controlling possession for a majority of the second half, Hiram's comeback attempt was short-lived as they were only able to score one goal in the 74th minute of play, setting the score at 2-1 as the outing came to a close.
The Presidents put up five shots in the first half and just one in the second with their two goals being the only shots to find their mark. Hiram took 17 shots in total, with 6 of them posing a threat and one finding its way in.
Senior Goalkeeper Charles Boldosser (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) recorded five saves throughout 90 minutes to earn the victory.
W&J is set to host Penn State Altoona on Saturday (Sept. 7) at Alexandre Stadium. Match time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
