Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Mackey’s Closing Minutes Penalty Kick Lift Presidents over Lions

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College men's soccer team tallied their second-consecutive win over Penn State Altoona in thrilling ending.

W&J now moves to 2-1 on the season having only dropped a 1-0 bout to Marietta in nonconference play.

Both teams entered the first half of play with some edge as the chippy bout commenced. The Presidents managed to pepper the goal in the opening half having out-shot the Lions 13-2 but to no avail. Despite also acquiring seven corners, the Presidents couldn't find the back of the net as each side headed into the half left scoreless.

The aggressiveness on both sides showed in the second half in a form of frustration. That same frustration would eventually lead to the Lions giving up a penalty kick opportunity with just over 11 minutes left in the bout.

Sophomore Logen Mackey (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) earned the right to make an impact on this season team as the individual taking the kick. After built-up anticipation, Mackey tucked his kick in the bottom left portion of the goal to give W&J the first lead of the game.

After close shots by the Lions as the match came to a close, the Presidents defense stood strong and managed to stay afloat with the 1-0 victory.

W&J out-shot the Lions 25-6 (8-2 on goal) and logged nine more opportunities through corners.

Charles Boldosser (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) logged all 90 minutes in goal with two saves.

The Presidents will look to travel north to Pittsburgh to square off with Carnegie Mellon on the pitch Wednesday (Sept. 11). The match is set for a start of 7:30 p.m.
