Washington, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College volleyball team fell to the Hiram Terriers in their 2024 home opener, 3-0.
The bout opened with a back-and-forward competition in the first set as both teams were getting a feel for the matchup.
Sophie Little (Marysville, Ohio/Fairbanks) helped settle the score with a kill, 22-20, in favor of the Terriers before Hiram entered a swift three-point run to close out the opening set.
W&J came out of the break clicking well as they hopped out to a quick 8-1 lead. A Hiram timeout stole the momentum from the Presidents, as the Terriers entered a five-point run. The Presidents took a one-point lead before Hiram knotted the score at 25 to continue the set. After a trading of points, the Terriers relied on an attacking error to close out the second set with a win.
W&J attempted a late comeback in the third set, after entering a three-point run thanks to three attack errors by the Terriers. The comeback hoped were cut short after Hiram logged a kill to close the match, 25-19.
Faith Fetsko (Venetia, Pa./South Park) led the Presidents in kills with 13 followed by Little who registered seven. Little led the team in blocks with five.
Adrianna Sacramento (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) headed the setting room with 16 assists followed by
Brielle Moorhouse (East Liberty, Ohio/Benjamin Logan) who registered 13. Sacramento also capped off the night with 16 digs.
W&J quickly returns to the court on the road for a two-game stint in Oberlin, Ohio. Their first matchup against John Carroll on Saturday (Sept. 7), has a scheduled opening serve of 1 p.m.
