OBERLIN, Ohio – The Washington & Jefferson College volleyball team recorded a weekend split this weekend at Oberlin College after a quick turnaround.
John Carroll 3, W&J 0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-18)
In the first set, both teams struggled in maintaining any consistent momentum leading to any large point runs. The Presidents remained in the mix until John Carroll recorded two kills to close out the opening set.
The Blue Streaks jumped out to early leads in each of the remaining sets. John Carroll was able to log multiple point swings that aided in pulling away permanently from W&J.
Sophie Little (Marysville, Ohio/Fairbanks) headed the Presidents in kills with seven followed by
Faith Fetsko (Venetia, Pa./South Park) and
Rian Benz (Strongsville, Ohio/Holy Name) both knotted at six each.
Adrianna Sacramento (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) and
Brielle Moorhouse (East Liberty, Ohio/Benjamin Logan) both split time setting for W&J. Sacramento registered 14 assists while Moorhouse filled in the gaps with nine.
W&J still found success in the defensive category as Little tallied three blocks followed by
Abby Oldham (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) and Benz with two.
W&J 3, Oberlin 0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-19)
The Presidents first win of the season was built on offensive consistencies as the team managed to find their rhythm early and often.
Early in the opening set, W&J went down 5-1 but combated the Oberlin run with an unanswered 6-0 run of their own to take a 7-5 lead. The Presidents would find points in bunches set up by kills by Little and Fetsko.
Piper McFarland (West Mifflin, Pa./Cornerstone Preparatory Academy) aced a serve followed by a kill by Fetsko to close out the set.
W&J took a slim victory in the second set after building confidence from the set one win. W&J held a tight three-point lead early on that was settled by Oberlin to knot the score at 17. The Presidents quickly reset and narrowly walked away with another set.
The Presidents ensured their victory in the third set with point streaks set up by attack errors by Oberlin. The W&J lead grew to as much as six points in the middle of the set which ended up being too much to comeback from for Oberlin.
Fetsko tied her season-high 13 kills in the win followed by Benz with nine. Moorhouse was credited with 20 assists with Sacramento adding 12 in the set department. Benz also served up four aces from the back line.
Little logged a game-high four blocks followed by Oldham with three. McFarland ensured the Presidents defensive effectiveness at libero with 15 digs.
W&J have a couple days to recoup from the weekend before matching up with Point Park on Tuesday (Sept. 10). Opening serve is set for 6:00 p.m.
