THE SERIES: The W&J Presidents face off against Hiram for the first time in over 33 years. The last matchup between the teams was a 61-6 Presidents victory at College Field in Washington, which extended W&J's series win-streak to seven games. The last time the squads faced off at Hiram came in a 1988, where W&J claimed a 27-14 win. The Terriers' last win against W&J was a 1982 meeting at Hiram, when Hiram dropped W&J 19-6. Hiram won the opener, and won seven of the first 11 bouts. The 1983 matchup was a tie, leading into the current streak for W&J.
RICH TRADITION: The Washington & Jefferson football program has won 791 games in its 132-year history (791–407–40), ranking third among NCAA Division III schools behind Mount Union (871) and Wittenberg (807). Widener (733) and Wabash (729) round out the D-III top five. Across all NCAA divisions, the Presidents' win total places them 22nd all-time.
ONWARD OCTOBER: W&J has enjoyed consistent success in October under
Mike Sirianni, going 71-16 (.816) in the month since 2003.
W&J VS. THE PAC: The Presidents have claimed 27 PAC championships—the most in league history and more than the next three programs combined. Former members Carnegie Mellon (10), John Carroll (8), and Thomas More (8) trail behind. Among current PAC programs, Allegheny, Bethany, and Grove City each hold four titles. W&J also maintains a winning record against every current PAC opponent:
Team Record (Pct.)
Allegheny 24-20-1 (.545)
Bethany 79-21 (.790)
Case Western Reserve 22-19-1 (.537)
Geneva 50-19-2 (.725)
Grove City 46-14 (.767)
Hiram 11-7-1 (.611)
Saint Vincent 15-1 (.938)
Thiel 53-22-2 (.707)
Waynesburg 48-4 (.923)
Westminster 39-7 (.848)
Total 389-134-7 (.744)
PAC PLAY: With last week's win over Grove City, W&J has won each of its PAC openers since the 2017 season.
BUCKEYE BATTLES: Under
Mike Sirianni, the Presidents have played 14 games in the state of Ohio. The Presidents hold a record of 8-6 (.571) in those games. In that time, five of the matchups have come at Case Western Reserve, three were played at Mount Union, Oberlin and Wooster have hosted W&J twice, and the Presidents have traveled to Wittenberg and John Carroll once each.
HALFWAY HOME: W&J has thrived under
Mike Sirianni when leading at halftime, posting a 153–6 record (.962) in such games
SHARPER IMAGE: Andrew Sharp (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) scored a touchdown for the third consecutive week to open the season. Sharp scored a rushing touchdown in both week one and week two, before making a scoring grab last week against Grove City.
THIS WEEK 100 YEARS AGO: In the fourth game of the 1925 season, W&J battled to a 0-0 tie against rival Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie Mellon).
PAC WEEKLY AWARDS
Offensive Player of the Week:
Kellan Stahl (Johnstown, Pa./Richland) W&J Senior QB
Defensive Player of the Week:
Coltin Hill Geneva Junior DL
Special Teams Player of the Week:
Deven Wyandt (Altoona, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle) W&J Senior K/P
Newcomer of the Week:
Devin Tufts Hiram Freshman WR
DYNAMIC DUO: Senior wideouts
John Peduzzi (Hilton Head, S.C./Hilton Head Christian Academy) and
Jacob Macosko (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) form one of the best receiving tandems in Division III. In week one, Peduzzi moved to second all-time in school history for both receiving yards and touchdowns. He stands 12 scores behind Jesse Zubik '18 on the touchdown list. Peduzzi also ranks as the active leader in Division III for both categories. Macosko sits three touchdowns shy of cracking the school's top five all-time.
This past week, it was Macosko torching the Grove City secondary. It marks the third consecutive season where Macosko crossed the 160-yard threshold against the Wolverines. In 2023, Macosko had 11 grabs for 168 yards, while last season's matchup saw the senior go 13 for 160 and two scores. Last week, it was perhaps his best performance of the three, as he notched 15 receptions for 180 and a touchdown.
STAHL-WART SENIOR: Senior quarterback
Kellan Stahl (Johnstown, Pa./Richland) had a coming-out party against a very good Grove City defense in week four. In the first half, Stahl had 253 yards and two scores through the air, with another touchdown on a four yard run. Stahl led the Presidents to a 34-0 lead in the third, before the Presidents took the foot off the gas. All in all, Stahl finished 28-41 for 337 yards through the air in his first win as a starter. Stahl was named as the PAC Offensive Player of the Week for the performance.
PRESIDENTIAL PRESSURE: The W&J pass rush had constant pressure on Grove City quarterbacks in week four. The Presidents had three sacks, including 1.5 from senior edge rusher
Nathaniel Kadosh-Harris (Irwin, Pa./Norwin), who also added a hurry as well. Kadosh-Harris has 2.5 sacks in just two games, as he missed the week two matchup against Hampden-Sydney. Also contributing for W&J was senior defensive tackle
Aidan Thomas (Johnstown, Pa./Richland), who had a half sack, as well as a tipped-pass breakup on fourth down. The pressure from W&J forced three interceptions from Grove City's passers, as sophomore
Dante DeRubbo (Washington, Pa./Trinity) grabbed two while senior
Angelo Volomino (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) grabbed the other for his second pick of the season.
THE LAST MATCHUP IN DETAIL: The Presidents and Terriers last faced off in the 1992 season opener. W&J claimed a 61-6 victory on the back of a 233 yard performance for W&J Hall of Famer Chris Babirad '94. Babirad scored five times in the effort, and was supported by Bryan Bandes '94 who added 62 yards and a score on the ground. The Red & Black outgained Hiram 524 yards to 212, with 393 of W&J's yards coming in the run game. The lone score for Hiram came on a 10-yard pass from quarterback Howard Joiner to Travis Booher.
