WASHINGTON, Pa. –
Bailey Miller (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) recorded her first career multi-goal game and
Lily Giering (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) played a hand in all three goals as the Washington & Jefferson College (4-7, 2-3 NCAC) field hockey team picked up a 3-2 victory over visiting Oberlin College (4-6, 1-5 NCAC) in North Coast Athletic Conference play Friday evening at Cameron Stadium.
W&J scored in each of the first three quarters before holding off Oberlin's attempt at a fourth quarter rally. The win marked the 14th straight for W&J in the head-to-head series.
The Presidents came out fast and were rewarded with an early lead for their efforts.
Lily Giering (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) collected a pass from outside the circle and smacked a shot in from out near the top of the circle to give W&J a 1-0 lead just nine-plus minutes into the game.
Lindsey Blount (Lockport, N.Y./Starpoint) registered the assist on the opening goal.
W&J took advantage of a penalty corner chance, which was drawn by
Capriana Romano (Peters Township, Pa./Peters Township), to add to the lead in the second quarter. After inserting the corner, Miller was able to get a touch on a hard drive from out top by Giering. The Miller goal gave W&J a 2-0 lead at halftime.
A series of penalty corner chances paid off for the Presidents in the third. Giering again connected with Miller, who tallied her second goal of the game to stretch the W&J lead to 3-0. The second goal of the night gave Miller her first career multi-goal game.
Oberlin scored twice in the fourth quarter. The Yeowomen scored on a penalty stroke shot with 10:02 remaining. Less than four minutes later, Oberlin found the back of the cage on a penalty corner chance to cut the W&J lead to 3-2.
The Red and Black preserved the victory by salting away the final six-plus minutes of game time.
Grace Erhard (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) finished with four saves in 60 minutes. Blount recorded a critical defensive save to help the back line efforts for W&J.
The Presidents held a slight 9-8 edge in shots. Both teams put seven shots on goal in the contest. W&J had an 8-6 advantage in penalty corners.
W&J hits the road for a pair of NCAC matches next weekend. The Presidents take on Transylvania on Oct. 18 before heading to Wittenberg on Oct. 19. Both games are scheduled for 11 a.m.
