Field Hockey Downed by First Place Denison in Home Finale


WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College field hockey team (5-9, 3-5 NCAC) dropped a 5-0 decision to the co-leading Denison University Big Red (9-6, 7-1 NCAC) in North Coast Athletic Conference play Wednesday afternoon at Cameron Stadium.

The Big Red opened the scoring in the final minutes of the first quarter with an unassisted score. Denison tacked on a second score with less than four minutes remaining in the second quarter to take a 2-0 lead into halftime.

Denison scored twice in the final minutes of the third. The Big Red score with 1:44 remaining in the frame before tallying a score with no time remaining after a corner attempt. The Big Red tallied its final goal in the final five minutes of the fourth.

Lily Giering (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) registered the lone shot on goal for W&J. Grace Erhard (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) made 12 saves over 60 minutes of game action. Erhard surpassed 150 saves for her career during Wednesday's match. 

W&J wraps up conference play at the College of Wooster on Saturday (October 25). Start time in Ohio is scheduled for 12 p.m.
