WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College men's soccer team (8-6-2, 4-4-1) edged the visiting Bethany Bison (3-9-3, 2-6-1) in a 1-0 final.
The Bethany offense got out to a productive start in the first half, outshooting W&J by a 6-1 margin. Each unit had one corner and three fouls in the half. Each of the Bison shots on target were batted away, taking the scoreless stalemate into the halftime break.
Coming out of the half, the Presidents were able to add more pressure on the Bison backline. In his first minutes in the match, the Presidents' leading scorer
Jimmy Gogol (Westminster, Md./Westminster) came through with the lone score of the contest.
Luke Curran (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Saint Jospeh) collected the assist for the Gogol goal in the 62
nd minute of play. Despite consistent pressure from Bethany, the Presidents held on for their eighth win of the season, 1-0.
Graeme Ewart (Arlington, Va./Yorktown) and
Logan Joseph (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) each combined for the team's seventh shutout victory of the season. Each goalkeeper collected three saves on the night.
The Presidents return to action on the road to face the Grove City Wolverines on Saturday (Oct. 25). The match is scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. start.
