STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – The Washington & Jefferson College women's volleyball team (10-8, 5-2) got back in the win column with a 3-1 (25-21, 25-23, 20-25, 25-21) victory over the Franciscan Barons (7-8,3-4).
Faith Fetsko (Venetia, Pa./South Park) and
Cali Dagen (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) led the offense with 17 and 16 kills, respectively. Fetsko also led the team in digs with 24 on the night.
Abby Oldham (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) had seven total blocks and totaled nine kills.
Brielle Moorhouse (East Liberty, Ohio/Benjamin Logan) led the setting room with 29 assists while
Isabella Bottiglieri (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin) added 18.
Following a slow start to the first set, the Presidents logged an eight-point run to jump out to an 18-12 lead. A kill by Oldham and service ace from
Sydney Allen (Washington, Pa./Trinity) bookended the run. The Presidents battled the Barons down the stretch and capped off the opening set victory with two kills from Oldham.
W&J nearly replicated the second set, using a four-point run in the midst of the second set to take a 17-12 lead. Two kills blocks helped the Presidents amass the advantage. Trading leads down the stretch, W&J closed out the second set victory with kills from Fetsko and
Stella Stossel (Indiana, Pa./Indiana).
Bouncing back from a set three loss, Oldham and Fetsko helped the Presidents take an early 6-1 lead in the fourth set. Dagen, Moorhouse and Oldham pushed the lead to 14-8 before Franciscan evened the score at 16. Dagen compiled three kills in the closing points of the match to take the 3-1 victory over the Barons.
Women's volleyball will return to action this Friday (Oct. 10) for its homecoming match against Grove City which doubles as the 20
th anniversary celebration of 2005 Presidents' Athletic Conference Champion team. Action will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the Salvitti Family Gymnasium.
