Balanced Effort Helps Women’s Volleyball Earn Road Win Over Geneva

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College women's volleyball team (14-12, 9-5 PAC) secured a 3-1 road victory over the host Geneva College Golden Tornadoes (5-22, 2-12 PAC) in Presidents' Athletic Conference play Saturday evening at the Metheny Fieldhouse in Beaver Falls.

A trio of Presidents reached double figures in kills. Abby Oldham (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) paced the Presidents with a team-high 13 kills. Faith Fetsko (Venetia, Pa./South Park) and Cali Dagen (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) backed those efforts with 11 kills and 10 kills, respectively. Brielle Moorhouse (East Liberty, Ohio/Benjamin Logan) finished with a team-best 22 assists. Isabella Bottiglieri (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin) put together a strong effort with 18 assists and 15 digs.

The Presidents were up to the task defensively Saturday night, both at the net and in the backline. Lola Jacobs (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) posted a team-best six total blocks while Fetsko added five. Fetsko had a season-high 29 digs. Five Presidents had 10 digs or more in the victory.

Facing a Golden Tornadoes squad inspired by Senior Recognition festivities held just prior to the match, W&J dropped the opening set by a 25-20 margin. The Presidents battled battle to force a 20-20 tie before Geneva ripped off five-straight points to claim the set win.

W&J turned the tables on the hosts in the second set. Trailing by a single point late in the set, W&J recorded the final five points of the set to pick up a 25-21 victory to even the match heading to the third. An assisted block by Oldham and Beyoncé Pierce finished off the late spurt for the Presidents. Oldham helped bookend the run after she tallied a kill to start the five-point swing.

The victory in the second set seemed to turn the tide for the Presidents, who grinded out a win in the third set. After Geneva raced out to a 9-5 lead, W&J roared back with nine-straight points to take a 14-9 advantage. The run featured an assisted block by Dagen and Oldham, kills by three different Presidents and a service ace by Jacobs. Consecutive kills by Oldham later pushed the margin to 19-11 as W&J eventually secured the set by a 25-18 score.

The Presidents gained an early 9-3 lead in the fourth set and methodically pulled away from the Golden Tornadoes to secure the match victory. Geneva closed the deficit to 12-11 but Oldham and Pierce registered back-to-back kills to give W&J some breathing room. The lead reached as many as nine points during the match-sealing set win.

W&J will look to close out the regular season strong as they face two important matches in the final week before the upcoming conference tournament. The Presidents host Franciscan on Tuesday (November 4) at Salvitti Family Gymnasium. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
