STANFORD, Calif. – A pair of four goal performances lifts the Washington & Jefferson College men's water polo team (2-18) to a 16-8 victory over the Wheaton (Mass.) Lyons (1-19).
The Presidents got off to a hot start offensively as they opened the contest with five goals. Sophomores
Brody Souder (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) and
Hector Santaella (Key Biscayne, Fla./Belen Jesuit Prep) opened the scoring. Freshmen
Topher Mitchell (Annapolis, Md./Loyola Blakefield) and Liam Miller rounded out the early offense. Souder and junior
Dillon Parker (Nipomo, Calif./Central Coast New Tech) picked up assists on the goals.
W&J scored three additional goals in the second period as senior captain
Aidan Miller (Grove City, Ohio/St. Charles Prep) netted two scores and freshman
Ciro Pro (Chicago, Ill./St. Rita of Cascia) got himself on the scoresheet with a tally of his own. Sophomores
Joseph Aranda (Albuquerque, N.M./Menaul School) and
Andrew Rippke (Perrysburg, Ohio/Saint Francis De Sales) picked up assists in the period.
In the third period, Mitchell picked up two goals and an assist. Aranda scored off an assist by L. Miller and A. Miller scored his hat trick. In the fourth period, A. Miller opened the scoring with his fourth goal from an assist by his brother. The Lyons got three points back before Santaella got himself his fourth goal from an assist by A. Miller. Junior
Adam Brock (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Ranch) rounded out the scoring for the Presidents as Mitchell picks up his second assist.
Defensively, W&J held the Lyons to one goal in the first three quarters of play. The team combined for 14 steals in the contest. Souder led the way with four steals and Pro was right behind him with three.
The Presidents look to take this momentum to close out the season on a positive note. W&J returns for one final game at Stanford tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. PST when they take on the Connecticut College Camels.
