Men’s Lacrosse Rides Second Quarter Scoring to 8-3 Victory over Hiram

HIRAM, Ohio – The Washington & Jefferson College men's lacrosse team picked up their second win of the season over future conference foe Hiram, 8-3.

The Presidents elevate to 2-1 on the season while Hiram falls to 0-1 in 2025. The Presidents duked out a similar outcome in 2023, where W&J best Hiram 8-5.

Spearheading the Presidents offensive efforts was sophomore Dylan Batche (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove). Batche dropped a game-high three goals for his first hat trick of the season. Zach Mey (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) followed close behind contributing two goals of his own while snagging three ground balls and causing one turnover. Braden Petrarco (Irwin, Pa./Norwin), Paul Shook (Camp Hill, Pa./Trinity) and Sean McCaffrey (Silver Spring, Md./Albert Einstein) each netted one goal each. Petrarco facilitated multiple scores for the Presidents, dishing out four assists.

Austin Hopkins (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) held down the defensive end with five ground balls and two caused turnovers. William Fenimore (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) led the team in caused turnovers with three. Anthony DeLuca (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) headed the Presidents in ground balls with six.

Hiram got on the board early with a goal within the first minute of play. Later in the second, the Terriers tacked on another goal to go up 2-0 heading into the second quarter.

Responding to their silence on the offensive end to start the game, the Presidents dialed up a needed scoring barrage in the second quarter. With 13:53 remaining in the second, W&J found the back of the net for the first time of the contest. Petrarco found Mey for the first score of the game for W&J, reducing the Terrier lead to one, 2-1. Minutes later, Petrarco found an open man again for a score as the on-target shot by McCaffrey tied the score at two. Mey netted his second and final goal of the contest off the dish from Shook with three minutes remaining to give the Red & Black their first lead of the matchup. Just under a minute later, Shook scored an unassisted goal to guide the Presidents to a 4-2 lead going into the half.

Both teams came out of the half with minimal success on the offensive end. W&J snuck in the only score of the third off an assist from Shook that was netted by Batche at the 10:03 mark.

At the start of the fourth, the Presidents fended off a two-man down opportunity for the Terriers and turned that into three straight goals from Petrarco and Batche, giving W&J an 8-2 lead. W&J held on for the remainder of the contest to take the 8-3 victory.

Sophomore goalkeeper Stephen Moschetta (Washington, Pa./Trinity) got the start in goal and played all 60 minutes with 14 saves. Moschetta picks up his second victory, moving his record to 2-1 on the year.

Despite losing the turnover battle, the Presidents held the advantage in clears (21-of-23) and face offs victories (9-5).

W&J caps their three-game road trip against Wilmington on Tuesday (Feb. 25). Opening face off is scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m.
