WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Washington & Jefferson College men's lacrosse team dropped their second contest of the season to the Wilmington Quakers, 11-8.
The Presidents fall to an even 2-2 on the season throughout nonconference play while the Quakers uplift to 2-1 on the year.
Paul Shook (Camp Hill, Pa./Trinity) led the Presidents in scoring with three goals, compiling his second hat trick of the season.
Braden Petrarco (Irwin, Pa./Norwin) accompanied Shook in multi-goal scoring with two goals, six ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Dylan Batche (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove),
Zach Mey (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) and
William Fenimore (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) all netted a goal each as well.
Anthony DeLuca (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) led the defensive efforts with five caused turnovers and five ground balls. Captain
Austin Hopkins (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) also contributed defensively, snatching two caused turnovers and picking up four ground balls.
The Quakers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after netting two goals in the first four minutes of play. W&J soon responded with their first score of the game at the 9:51 mark as Petrarco scored their first points of the contest on a solo effort.
Building off their momentum after the first quarter, the Presidents opened the second with a 2-0 run. Mey scored an unassisted goal to kick off the scoring followed by Mey setting up Shook for his first goal of the game. With their first lead of the contest, Wilmington responded with a rapid equalizer before Batche found the back of the net off a pass from Fenimore at the 5:50 mark to regain the lead. The Quakers wrapped the first half on a 3-0 scoring run, taking a 6-4 lead into the break.
Wilmington came into the second half of play still effective on offense, outscoring the Presidents 2-1. W&J's lone score of the third came off an unassisted effort by Shook.
After allowing Wilmington's ninth goal of the night, the Presidents mounted a crucial comeback attempt sparked by Shook's third goal of the day from Fenimore at the 8:22 mark in the fourth. Over three minutes later, Batche found Petrarco followed quickly by a dish from Mey to Fenimore, reducing the Quakers lead to one, 9-8. A timeout by Wilmington at the 3:16 mark effectively muted the Presidents' comeback attempt, netting two insurance goals to take an 11-8 victory over W&J.
Noah Bracco (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic) got the start in goal for the Presidents with a full 60 minutes of work, compiling nine saves.
Men's lacrosse returns to action at Alexandre Stadium this Friday (Feb. 28), to take on the Mount Union Purple Raiders. Opening face off Is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start.
