Men’s Tennis Picks up Third-Consecutive Conference Win Coasting Past Waynesburg, 7-0

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College men's tennis team coasted to their third-straight Presidents' Athletic Conference victory over the visiting Waynesburg Yellow Jackets, 7-0.

The Presidents move to 5-6 on the year with an untouched 3-0 record in conference matches. The Yellow Jackets slide to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in conference play. This marks the best start in conference play for W&J since the 2019 season where the Presidents went 7-0 in PAC matches.

W&J scooped the first team point of the day after their sweep of the doubles matches to go up 1-0. Aarav Surapaneni (Coraopolis, Pa./Moon Area) and Connor Simms (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon McMillan) picked up the first win at No. 3 doubles with a 6-1 victory. Alex Duing (South Park, Pa./South Park) and Nate Clarke (New Kensington, Pa./Valley) clinched the team point with a 6-2 victory at No. 2 doubles. Completing the sweep at the top doubles slot, Jackson Akers (Logan, W. Va./Logan) and Nick Kubik (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) won their match 6-2.

The Presidents ensured their third conference victory of the season with a sweep of the singles matches. Akers took the first win of the evening at No. 2 singles with a 6-0, 6-1 showing. Duing, court neighbor and teammate at No. 3 singles, bested his opponent shortly after 6-1, 6-0.

With the Presidents up 3-0, Mitch Kenney (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) on court six of the Janet Swanson Tennis Center won his No. 6 singles match in straight sets 6-1, 6-1 to clinch the victory. Surapaneni followed suit with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 4 singles. Simms also best his foe at No. 5 singles by a set score of 6-2, 6-1.

Kubik completed the full sweep with a 6-1 6-3 victory at No. 1 singles.

Both W&J tennis programs return to action this Saturday (March 29) on the road to face the Mount Union Purple Raiders. First serve for each match is set for 1:00 p.m.
