Men’s Tennis Pushes Win Streak to Four Following Victory over Mount Union

ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Washington & Jefferson College men's tennis team picked up a 5-2 victory over the host Mount Union Purple Raiders.

The Presidents continue their win streak to four, moving to an even 6-6 overall on the season. This marks the first victory over Mount Union for the W&J men's tennis team in program history, moving to a 1-3 all-time record.

W&J got things started by earning the first team point of the match through doubles play, 1-0. Connor Simms (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon McMillan) and Abhinav Yarramaneni (Mountain View, Calif./Los Altos) picked up the win at No. 3 doubles by a set score of 6-1. Following a loss at No. 1 doubles to split the doubles score, Alex Duing (South Park, Pa./South Park) and Nate Clarke (New Kensington, Pa./Valley) sealed the team point for the Presidents with a closely contested 6-4 score at No. 2 doubles.

W&J closed out the nonconference victory in singles play, finishing 4-2. Down 2-1 due to losses at the top two singles slots, W&J bounced back with four-straight wins started by Duing. The junior captain took his No. 3 singles match 7-5, 6-2 to knot the team score at two all. Simms stepped up next with a swift 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 6 singles.

One team point away from locking up the fourth-straight win, Aarav Surapaneni (Coraopolis, Pa./Moon Area) bested his opponent at No. 5 singles 6-2 in the first set and 7-2 in the tiebreaker of the second set. Clarke added to the Presidents win with a victory at No. 4 singles in three sets 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Men's tennis returns back to Presidents' Athletic Conference play this Wednesday (April 2) against the hosting Thiel Tomcats. First serve is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
