ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The Washington & Jefferson College women's water polo team (13-6, 6-2) claimed a 16-14 victory over the Carthage Firebirds (5-20, 3-7) in their first tilt of the 2025 Collegiate Water Polo Association Division III Tournament in Rock Island, Ill. Friday afternoon.
Emma Halle (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) led the Presidents offensively with five goals. Laura Anthony (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) contributed a hat trick to the team total. Emmie Ratcliff (Friendswood, Texas/Friendswood), Anastacia Didovich (Venice, Fla./Venice) and Hallie Ratcliff (Friendswood, Texas/Friendswood) added two scores each. Sydney Neumann (Long Beach, Calif./Millikan) and Autumn Woollcott (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) also netted a goal each for the Red & Black. Anthony dished out a game-high four assists and tallied a game-high seven points.
Halle opened the game with a goal in the first minute of play. Anthony expanded the lead to 2-0 at the 4:38 mark. After two Carthage goals, the Ratcliff sisters regained the Presidents two-point lead with goals from H. Ratcliff and E. Ratcliff in the final minutes of the first quarter, 4-2.
Halle began the scoring once more in the second quarter with 6:03 left in the first half. Three-consecutive goals from the Firebirds tied the game with 2:02 remaining, 5-5. H. Ratcliff scored once more to put the Presidents ahead 6-5 heading into the half.
Carthage outscored W&J 5-4 in the third quarter. Anthony netted two goals in the period, accompanied by scores from Neumann and Didovich to knot the score at 10.
Both teams traded goals three times within the first three minutes of the final quarter of play. Two goals from Halle and a score from E. Ratcliff kept the game tied, 13-13. Consecutive goals from Woollcott, Didovich and Halle closed out the scoring for the Presidents, 16-13. Carthage was able to net one last goal in the last minute of play, but their efforts were fruitless as W&J claimed the 16-14 victory.
W&J competes in the CWPA Tournament Semifinals tomorrow (April 12) against the No. 2 seeded Macalester. The matchup is set for a 1:00 p.m. CST start.
