WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College women's lacrosse team rolled to a commanding 22-6 victory over visiting Franciscan University on Senior Day at Alexandre Stadium Saturday afternoon.
The Presidents conclude the regular season winners of eight-straight games. W&J holds a 10-4 overall record and an 8-1 mark in Presidents' Athletic Conference play. Franciscan's season ends at 6-9 overall and 3-6 in league action.
W&J had eight different players score in the victory. Six different players recorded hat tricks on the day.
Anna Kloehn (Canton, Ohio/Jackson) and
Caleigh Bogats (Oakdale, Pa./Chartiers Valley) led the way with four goals apiece.
Brynne Stewart (Painesville, Ohio/Andrews Osborne Academy),
Brianna Nader (Cochranton, Pa./Conneaut Area),
Ella Holland (Healdsburg, Calif./Cardinal Newman) and
Mya Bolinda (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) each finished with three goals. Stewart added four assists to finish with a team-high seven points. Bolinda finished with a game-high five draw controls while Bogats and
Avery Byard (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) added four draw controls each.
Kloehn scored three times in the opening quarter as W&J built a 7-2 lead after 15 minutes of play. The Presidents opened the second quarter with consecutive goals by Bogats and a pair of scores by Stewart to extend the lead to 10-2. Following a score by Franciscan, Bogats tallied back-to-back unassisted goals in front of a Bolinda goal that was assisted by Stewart. That run helped the Presidents lead by a 13-4 margin at halftime.
W&J was able to push its lead back into double digits for good with a strong second half. The Presidents outscored the Barons by a 5-2 margin in the third quarter. Holland scored twice in the frame. Her goal with 48 seconds left on the clock made it 18-6 entering the final quarter of play.
W&J scored all four goals during the fourth quarter. Nader scored a pair of unassisted goals.
Haley Lawyer (Glenside, Pa./Archbishop Wood) and
Ella Phillips (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) also both scored a goal each in the fourth.
Defensively,
Sammy Hartz (Ijamsville, Md./Oakdale) led the Presidents with five ground balls and three caused turnovers. Lawyer added four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Phillips caused three turnovers and had a pair of ground balls.
Gianna Baker (Carlisle, Pa./Trinity) made nine saves in the victory. The Presidents held statistical advantages in shots (37-18), ground balls (26-10) and draw controls (18-13).
Before the start of the game, W&J recognized seniors Phillips and Lawyer, as well as Baker for their contributions to the program.
W&J has earned the number two seed for the upcoming PAC Championship Tournament. By virtue of finishing in the top two, the Presidents receive a bye during the quarterfinal round. W&J will await the winner of Tuesday's quarterfinal matchup between third-seeded Chatham and sixth-seeded Allegheny. The winner of that match will advance to face the Presidents in the semifinal round on Thursday, May 1. Start time is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Alexandre Stadium.
