WASHINGTON, Pa. – Washington & Jefferson College men's lacrosse (5-6, 1-2) picked up their first victory in Presidents' Athletic Conference play against the Thiel Tomcats (1-9, 0-3), 19-13.
Freshman
William Fenimore (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) led the Presidents offensively with a career-high five goals.
Zach Mey (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) and
Paul Shook (Camp Hill, Pa./Trinity) each had hat tricks on the evening with four and three goals each. Mey also earned his 100th-career point while Shook dished seven assists.
Anthony DeLuca (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) led the Presidents defensively with six caused turnovers with five ground balls.
Braden Petrarco (Irwin, Pa./Norwin) caused five turnovers on the evening with seven ground balls, netting two goals offensively.
Following an early goal by the Tomcats to start the game, W&J rattled off three-straight goals in the first quarter. Shook netted the first W&J goal off the feed from
Colin Golebiewski (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) followed by Fenimore connecting with Mey for a goal. Defenseman
Austin Hopkins (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) capped off the run with an unassisted goal. Thiel added two goals before the close of the first to knot the score at three.
Fenimore and Mey each scored to open the second quarter, elevating the W&J lead to 5-3. After the Tomcats tied the game at five, Petrarco and Fenimore scored to grant the lead back to W&J, 7-5. Golebiewski closed the scoring for W&J in the first half, heading into the break tied 8-8.
W&J outscored Thiel in the second half, 11-5. Mey and Fenimore netted two goals in the third quarter accompanied by Petrarco with one goal.
Colton Powers (Chesterfield, Va./Matoaca),
Riley Bullock (Kennett Square, Pa./Wilmington Christian (Del.)), Golebiewski, Fenimore and Shook all scored in the six-goal fourth quarter which helped the Presidents pull away for the remainder of the contest.
Stephen Moschetta (Washington, Pa./Trinity) picked up the win in goal with 11 saves in 60 minutes of work.
W&J travels to Bethany on Wednesday (April 9) for a 7:00 p.m. conference game.
