Softball Takes Nightcap in Series Split with Geneva

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. - The Washington & Jefferson College softball team (10-11, 5-5) split in a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader on the road against Geneva (16-8, 5-5) Wednesday evening. The Presidents dropped a 7-1 loss in game one before recovering with an 8-4 victory in game two.

Maddie Luxenberger (Montoursville, Pa./Loyalsock Township) led the Presidents offensively going 5-for-7 at the plate in today's twin bill. The freshman catcher had two hits in game one and followed up in game two with three hits that included a double. She also led the team in RBIs, driving in four of W&J's eight runs in game two.

Hannah Allen (Harrison City, Pa./Penn Trafford) had a multi-hit effort on the day as well with a double in the first game and base hit in game two. Kyra Blauth (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) racked up a single and a two-run homer in W&J's game two victory.

Game One – W&J 1, Geneva 7

The Presidents scored their only run of the game in the first inning when Allen hit an RBI double to right center field that scored Mirranda Rinehart (Washington, Pa./Trinity).

Geneva responded in the bottom of the frame with three runs on two hits before W&J halted the Golden Tornadoes offensive rally.

Geneva kept the offense rolling putting up solo scores in the next two innings and three runs in the fourth while holding W&J to just two hits over the final six innings. Both W&J hits were produced by M. Luxenberger.

Taylor Dunn (Washington, Pa./Trinity) took the loss for the Presidents after 3.0 innings of work. Kaylee Witner (Freeland, Pa./MMI Preparatory School) worked 3.0 innings in relief with three strikeouts.

Game Two – W&J 8, Geneva 4

The Presidents rebounded in game two putting up three in the first frame of play. Allen dropped a single in left field to score the first run. M. Luxenberger scored the next two with a single to right center that scored Savannah Bodnar (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) and Allen, 3-0.

In the third, M. Luxenberger deposited a double to right center scoring Bodnar and Blauth before being pushed home on a single to right field from Aliya Schraeder (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette), 6-0.

Blauth belted her two-run homer in the top of the fourth to tack on two more insurance runs heading into the bottom of the fourth with an 8-0 advantage.

Geneva tried to dwindle the W&J lead putting up a lone run in the bottom of the fourth and three in the bottom of the sixth but were unable to surpass the eight-run difference.

Macayle Thornhill (Warren, Ohio/Jackson-Milton) received the win with 5.2 innings pitched. Witner pitched 1.1 scoreless innings of relief.

Up Next: The Presidents return to action next on Sunday (April 13) as they host the Saint Vincent Bearcats for a PAC doubleheader set to get underway at 2:00 p.m.
