WASHINGTON, Pa. –
Joscelynn Anglin (Biglerville, Pa./Biglerville) scored less than a minute into the overtime period to propel the Washington & Jefferson College field hockey team to a 1-0 victory over visiting Allegheny College in the North Coast Athletic Conference opener Wednesday evening at Cameron Stadium.
The Presidents and Gators delivered another classic game in their recent rivalry. The two teams have met eight times since Allegheny instituted their program in 2019. Seven of the eight matchups have been one goal games. Four of those games have been decided in overtime or a shootout.
Anglin's goal capped an impressive run down the field by the Presidents.
Lindsey Blount (Lockport, N.Y./Starpoint) sent a pass that
Lily Giering (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) corralled just outside the right edge of the circle. Giering then passed back to Blount, who approached the goalie 1-on-1 before dishing the pass over to Anglin just in front of the cage near the left post. Anglin's goal was the first of her collegiate career.
W&J held a 12-9 advantage in shots. Allegheny registered a 9-2 advantage in penalty corners.
Grace Erhard (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) secured the shutout with six saves over the 60-plus minutes of action in the cage. The shutout is the first of Erhard's collegiate career.
W&J heads to Virginia this weekend for a pair of non-conference games. The Presidents face Sweet Briar on Saturday before taking on Eastern Mennonite on Sunday.
