Field Hockey Scores Early but Drops Overtime Decision to Sweet Briar

SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Washington & Jefferson College field hockey team suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 overtime defeat to host Sweet Briar College in non-conference play Saturday afternoon at Thayer Field in Virginia.

In search of its second-straight victory, things started well for the Presidents. W&J gained an early lead when Lily Giering (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) scored an unassisted goal in the fifth minute of the game. Giering's second goal of the season pushed the Presidents in front.

The Presidents had a few chances to add to their lead early in the second, as Giering recorded a pair of shots including one that the Vixens had a defensive save on. Sweet Briar evened the score with about five minutes remaining before halftime. Emmi Burdine scored unassisted to even the score at 1-1.

W&J outshot Sweet Briar by a 6-2 margin in the second half. The Presidents had all five shots in the fourth quarter but were unable to break the tie.

In the overtime session, Burdine tallied her second goal of the day to secure the win for the host Vixens. The Burdine score game after a pair of passes on a corner opportunity for Sweet Briar.

The Red and Black edged Sweet Briar 11-10 in shots (6-4 in shots on goal). W&J recorded 10 penalty corners as opposed to seven for the host squad. Giering recorded a game-high four shots.

W&J completes its Virginia trip on Sunday (Sept. 14) when they face Eastern Mennonite University. The game will start at 1 p.m.
