HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – The Washington & Jefferson College football team (0-2) narrowly lost to the RV Hampden-Sydney Tigers (2-0), 38-31.
Andrew Sharp (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) led the offensive contributors for the Presidents with 119 yards on the ground and one touchdown. Sharp averaged 6.0 yard per carry and hauled in three catches for 34 yards.
John Peduzzi (Hilton Head, S.C./Hilton Head Christian Academy) led the receiving core with 11 receptions for 112 yards and one touchdown.
Kellan Stahl (Johnstown, Pa./Richland) finished the day with 281 passing yards and one passing touchdown. He also rushed for 65 yards and one rushing touchdown.
Brock Sherman (Copley, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) and
Da'Jahn Telfair (Cleveland, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) led the team in total tackles with nine each. Sherman also contributed 1.5 sacks and tackles for loss.
Antoine Smith (Pittsburgh, Pa./Serra Catholic) collected a team-high 2.5 sacks with four total tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss.
Angelo Volomino (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) caught his first interception of the season.
Following a low-scoring first quarter, each unit found their rhythm in the second quarter. The Tigers grew a 17-3 lead prior to the Presidents scoring touchdowns in back-to-back possessions which included rushing touchdowns from
Kobe Derosa (New Castle, Pa./Laurel) and Stahl. W&J entered the half down tied, 17-17.
Hampden-Syndey looked to break the game open in the third quarter, outscoring the Presidents 21-7. W&J's lone score in the quarter came on an 18-yard reception to Peduzzi for a touchdown.
W&J began to inch back into the contest at the eight-minute mark of the fourth quarter as Stahl connected with Peduzzi again for an 11-yard touchdown to bring the Tigers lead to 38-31. Quickly getting the ball back after the score, W&J started a methodical drive which drove them to the Hampden-Sydney five-yard line. Stahl and the W&J offense dialed up a five-yard passing play to
Marc Conti (New Castle, Pa./Mohawk) for a would-be touchdown before being nullified due to a holding penalty.
The Presidents take the next week off before heading to No. 15 ranked Grove City for their first Presidents' Athletic Conference matchup of the season. Kickoff is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start.
