GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College football team (1-2, 1-0) defeated the No. 18 ranked Grove City Wolverines (1-2, 0-1) in dominant fashion, 34-14.
Kellan Stahl (Johnstown, Pa./Richland) commanded the offense, throwing for 337 yards (28-for-41) and two passing touchdowns. Stahl also rushed for 23 yards and one touchdown.
Kobe Derosa (New Castle, Pa./Laurel) led the rushing room with 11 carries for 72 yards and a touchdown.
Jacob Macosko (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) dominated the passing game with 15 receptions for 180 yards and a touchdown. This marks the third consecutive season Macosko has compiled more than 10 or more receptions and 160 or more receiving yards against the Wolverines.
The defensive secondary for the Presidents created three turnovers throughout the contest.
Dante DeRubbo (Washington, Pa./Trinity) had two interceptions while
Angelo Volomino (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) added one pick.
Nathaniel Kadosh-Harris (Irwin, Pa./Norwin) led the team with 1.5 sacks.
Brock Sherman (Copley, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) headed the team in tackling with eight total tackles.
The Presidents opened the contest with a 24-point first half. Opening the first quarter with a field goal created by an interception, W&J got to work in the redzone in the second quarter. On consecutive drives, the Presidents scored two passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown.
Andrew Sharp (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) and Macosko each hauled in a receiving touchdown while Stahl powered his way into the endzone for a four-yard rushing touchdown to grant a 24-0 advantage at the half. W&J held Grove City scoreless in the first half with 100 yards of total offense.
The Presidents came out of the break with the same momentum, drilling a 31-yard field goal in the opening drive. With the ball back after the W&J defense created a three-and-out, Derosa capped off a seven-play drive with a leaping effort over the offensive line for a one-yard touchdown to extend the Red & Black lead to 34-0. Grove City mustered their first points of the game in the third quarter. The Wolverines found the endzone one final time in the closing minutes of the fourth quarter to close out the W&J victory, 34-14.
The Presidents return to the gridiron next Saturday (Oct. 4) to face the Hiram Terriers on the road. Opening kickoff is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start.
