DELAWARE, Ohio – The Washington & Jefferson College field hockey team (3-4, 1-1 NCAC) suffered a 9-0 defeat at the hands of defending conference champion Ohio Wesleyan (3-3, 2-0 NCAC) Tuesday afternoon in North Coast Athletic Conference play at Selby Stadium in central Ohio.
Ohio Wesleyan out-shot W&J by a 25-7 margin. The Battling Bishops had a 13-4 advantage in shots on goal. The hosts had an 8-3 margin in penalty corner attempts.
The Presidents, who had been competitive in each of their first six matches of the season, were unable to suppress a Battling Bishops' offensive attack that came out firing on all cylinders after losing their previous game.
Following 10-plus minutes of scoreless play, Ohio Wesleyan tallied a pair of goals in the final five minutes of the first quarter. The Battling Bishops found the back of the cage three times in the second quarter to extend their lead to 5-0 at halftime.
OWU tacked on three more goals in the third and one final score in the fourth.
Grace Erhard (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) made four saves over the full 60 minutes. Erhard made a save on a penalty stroke attempt by Ohio Wesleyan in the third quarter.
Bella Updyke (Canonsburg, Pa./Peters Township) recorded a team-best two shots for the Presidents.
Sara Schriver (Pickens, S.C./Christ Church Episcopal School) had perhaps the best scoring chance for the Presidents but her shot was saved with around four minutes remaining.
W&J heads to Penn State University to face Penn State Harrisburg in non-conference play on Saturday, Sept. 20. The game, which will be played in State College, will get underway at 1 p.m.
