WASHINGTON, Pa. – Washington & Jefferson College women's soccer (1-1) opened its home slate with a 1-0 defeat to the Marietta Pioneers (1-1-1).
Through the first half of play, the Pioneers created an early offensive advantage with an 11-1 shot advantage at the interval. Despite the shot volume, the Presidents saved all six shots on goal to take a scoreless tie into the half.
The Presidents came out of the break aggressive offensively as Katelyn Burley (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) opened the second half with a quick scoring chance. Fending off the Presidents' scoring attempts, the Pioneers broke through with the lone goal in the 58th minute off a shot curved into the top corner. The Presidents regrouped and defensively held strong for the rest of the match. Natalie Faingnaert (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) and Alexa Taylor (Aliquippa, Pa./OLSH) created chances in the closing stages of the match, but the Presidents ultimately fell victim to the clock.
W&J goalkeeper Molly Schoch (Burgettstown, Pa./Burgettstown) ended the match with eight saves throughout the 90 minutes of regulation.
The Presidents look to respond next Friday (Sept. 5) on the road at La Roche. Opening kick is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. start.
