PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Washington and Jefferson College women's soccer team (2-1-0) used a strong offensive performance from sophomore
Alexa Taylor (Aliquippa, Pa./OLSH) to secure a victory against the La Roche Redhawks (1-2-0) on Friday evening.
Taylor found the back of the net two times in the second half of play, the contests only two goals.
W&J created an abundance of offense throughout the duration of the match. The Presidents generated six corner kicks and 22 total shots against the Redhawks defense.
Through 45 minutes of play, the two squads found themselves locked in a scoreless tie.
 Just over 10 minutes into the second half, the W&J back line made a stellar stop at midfield. The Presidents played the ball up the right side of the field and
Ava Capozzoli (Canonsburg, Pa./Chartiers Houston) found Taylor positioned in front of the net to get the Presidents on the board, 1-0. The Capozzoli assist was the first point of her collegiate career.
With 32 seconds left in regulation, Taylor chipped in another goal. With a strong left-foot strike from outside of the box, the sophomore put the game out of reach.
Gianna Patterson (Fox Chapel, Pa./Fox Chapel) earned her first collegiate shutout in goal for W&J, stopping four Redhawks shots. The Presidents' defense was strong as a whole, allowing only six shots total.
Women's soccer will return home to Washington, Pa on Sunday (Sept. 7) to face Penn State Altoona. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. at Alexandre Stadium.
