Four Presidents Net Goals in Victory over Penn State Altoona

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College women's soccer team (3-1) continued their strong start to the season with a 4-1 victory against the Penn State Altoona Lions (2-1-1).

The Presidents had the offensive momentum right from the opening kickoff. Freshman Ava Capozzoli (Canonsburg, Pa./Chartiers Houston) scored her first collegiate goal in the sixth minute off an assist by Kendall Obley (Buena Vista, Pa./McKeesport). Sophomore Alexa Taylor (Aliquippa, Pa./OLSH) continued her scoring run with a goal in the 20th minute off an assist by Capozzoli. Junior Dove Corrette-Bennett (New Castle, Pa./Neshannock) added herself to the scoring list in only her second game back during the 36th minute off an assist from Rylin Bugosh (Mount Pleasant, Pa./Mount Pleasant) to take a 3-0 lead into the half.

At the halftime interval, the Presidents were up 7-2 on shots and 4-0 on corner kicks.

W&J picked up right where they left off in the second half as junior Maura Heberle (Hookstown, Pa./South Side Beaver) netted a goal to elevate the score to 4-0 in the 55th minute off a pass through the defense by Katelyn Burley (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills). The Lions grabbed a consolation goal in the 71st minute before falling to the Presidents to the 4-1 final score.

In goal, freshman Gianna Patterson (Fox Chapel, Pa./Fox Chapel) made four saves throughout the 90-minute contest.

The Presidents look to continue this offensive consistency this Wednesday (Sept. 10) on the road against the Carnegie Mellon Tartans. The opening kickoff will be at 7:30 p.m.
