WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington and Jefferson men's soccer team (1-0-1) opened their home schedule with a 1-1 draw against the Marietta Pioneers (1-1-1).
W&J got off to a hot start in the home opener as Owen Rowlands (Hazle Township, Pa./Wyoming Seminary Prep) scored the Presidents sole goal of the match on an unassisted attempt in the 3rd minute of action. The Presidents made a statement early and kept that momentum throughout the majority of the first half. With over a minute left in the opening half, the Pioneers scored the equalizer to stun W&J's momentum prior to halftime, 1-1.
Despite the deadlock at one goal each, W&J took positives heading into the break having outshot Marietta 6-4 in the first half. Both teams had three corners and two saves apiece.
The second half was controlled by the Marietta offensive attack. The Pioneers led in shot attempts 8-6 and controlled the corner kicks category 6-0 in the second half. W&J fended off a close-range attempt in the 80th minute to keep the game tied 1-1.
Between the goalposts, junior Graeme Ewart (Arlington, Va./Yorktown) and freshman Logan Joseph (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) each had two saves in 45 minutes of action.
The Presidents look to continue their unbeaten start to the season at Penn State Altoona on Saturday (Sept. 6). Kick off os scheduled to commence at 3:00 p.m.
