WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College men's tennis team (0-3) dropped a 5-2 decision to Division II West Liberty (1-0), Tuesday evening.
The Presidents went down early in the match losing two out of three of the doubles match, allowing the Hilltoppers to take a 1-0 match lead. W&J's sole victory in doubles play came at the No. 3 position as
Jackson Akers (Logan, W. Va./Logan) and
Nick Bussard (New Kensington, Pa./Valley) picked up a 7-6 (7-2) win.
West Liberty closed the door on the match in singles play, winning four singles matches to the Presidents' two.
Nate Clarke (New Kensington, Pa./Valley) won his No. 5 singles match after dropping his first set, 7-6 (7-3). Clarke bounced back in the following sets, 6-3, 10-7, to win the match.
Connor Simms (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) won in straight sets 6-4, 6-2 at No. 6 singles.
W&J returns to the court one last time before the end of their fall season on Saturday (Oct. 11) for a rematch with the Baldwin Wallace Yellow Jackets. The match is scheduled to commence doubles play at 1:00 p.m. with singles play to follow.
