WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington and Jefferson College women's tennis team (1-0) opened up their 2025 fall season with a 5-2 victory against the Pitt-Greensburg Bobcats (0-3).
Freshman Austyn Paugh (Jane Lew, W.Va./Notre Dame) and sophomore Mackenzie Gumto (Renfrew, Pa./Knoch) started the duel off strong with a 6-0 win at No. 3 doubles. The Bobcats flipped their sets and claimed the doubles team point with wins at the other two matches, 1-0.
The Presidents flipped the script in the singles, taking five of the six matches to secure the 5-2 victory. Four of the five singles victories were in straight sets. Junior captain Claire Loomis (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) took the No. 1 singles match 7-5, 6-0, tallying the clinching point in the 5-2 win. Freshman Keiran Moorhead (Canonsburg, Pa./Peters Township) won a tight battle 6-4, 3-6, 10-3 in the deciding set tiebreaker at No. 3 singles.
The Presidents showed their depth at the bottom of the lineup as freshman Maya Hamade (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) won her No. 4 singles match 6-1, 6-1. Paisley Cole (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) won the No. 5 singles match 6-0, 6-1 and Paugh won at No. 6 singles with a score of 6-0, 6-0.
The Presidents look to continue this productive start to the season when they host Division II Seton Hill on Wednesday (Sept. 10) at the Janet Swanson Tennis Center. Doubles matches will begin at 4:00 p.m. with singles matches to follow.
