WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College women's lacrosse team (2-2) picked up their first victory of the season on their home turf at Alexandre Stadium over the Marietta Pioneers (4-4), 17-6.
Five Presidents scored hat tricks on the night including
Avery Byard (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown),
Bekah Meiklejohn (Boonsboro, Md./Boonsboro),
Caleigh Bogats (Oakdale, Pa./Chartiers Valley),
Ella Holland (Healdsburg, Calif./Cardinal Newman) and
Mya Bolinda (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills).
Brynne Stewart (Painesville, Ohio/Andrews Osborne Academy) and
Anna Kloehn (Canton, Ohio/Jackson) also netted one goal each. Bogats and Bolinda led with a game-high six points and three assists each.
Holland and
Sammy Hartz (Ijamsville, Md./Oakdale) led the team in caused turnovers with three each. Hartz also led the team in ground balls with six while Holland collected five ground balls. Bogats led the team in draw controls with five.
W&J got out of the gate dominant offensively with a 7-0 first quarter tally. Bogats, Bolinda and Holland all had two goals in the first 13 minutes of action as the Presidents grew their advantage in the early going. The stout defense of the Presidents held the Pioneers to only three shots in the first quarter while creating seven turnovers.
Marietta was able to break through the W&J defense in the second quarter, still being outscored by a margin of 5-4. Bogats, Bolinda and Holland completed their hat tricks on the night with one goal apiece in the second. On Bolinda's third goal of the night, the senior scored her 100
th career goal off an assist from fellow senior Stewart at the 2:57 mark. The Presidents closed the first half on a 2-0 run off goals from Stewart and Holland, 12-4.
The Presidents coasted to the final score of 17-6 in the remaining 30 minutes of action. The Red & Black outscored the Pioneers by a margin of 5-2 in the final two quarters. Meiklejohn completed her first collegiate hat trick in the third quarter off a dish from Bolinda for the power play score.
The Presidents held differentials in total shots (27-22), ground balls (25-12), draw controls (14-11) and caused turnovers (9-7). W&J managed to gain successful clears at a better clip than the Pioneers, holding a 19-15 edge in successful clears.
Megan Brackney (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) picked up her first win of the season in goal with 11 saves in 60 minutes of work.
W&J women's lacrosse returns to action this Saturday (March 21) to open Presidents' Athletic Conference play at Alexandre Stadium against the Grove City Wolverines. Opening draw is set for a 1:00 p.m. start.
