Women’s Lacrosse Downed in League Opener by Grove City

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College women's lacrosse team (2-3, 0-1 PAC) suffered a 16-11 loss to visiting Grove City College (6-3, 2-0 PAC) in Presidents' Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon at Alexandre Stadium.

Mya Bolinda (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) and Brynne Stewart (Painesville, Ohio/Andrews Osborne Academy) finished with six points and five points, respectively, to pace the offensive efforts. Bolinda finished with three goals, three assists, four ground balls and two draw controls. Stewart had two goals and three assists to surpass the 100-point mark for her career. Anna Kloehn (Canton, Ohio/Jackson) produced her first hat trick of the season with a three-goal effort. With a pair of points, Ella Holland (Healdsburg, Calif./Cardinal Newman) also reached 100 career points. Caleigh Bogats (Oakdale, Pa./Chartiers Valley) grabbed 10 a game-high 10 draw controls. Sammy Hartz (Ijamsville, Md./Oakdale) led the defensive efforts with four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Madison Hecker (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) made seven saves in goal.

The Presidents opened the scoring as Kloehn finished off an assist from Bogats just two minutes into the game. Grove City countered with three-straight goals to take the advantage midway through the quarter. The Red and Black used scores by Bolinda and Kloehn to even the score at 3-3 with 5:05 left in the first. The Wolverines tallied three-straight goals to hold the 6-3 advantage after a quarter of play.

W&J turned things up defensively in the second quarter. The Presidents outpaced the Wolverines by a 3-1 score in the frame. Stewart, Holland and Bogats each scored as the Presidents trimmed the deficit to 7-6 at halftime.

The Presidents wasted little time by scoring to even the game at 7-7 on a player-up goal by Bekah Meiklejohn (Boonsboro, Md./Boonsboro) at the 12:41 mark of the third. The Wolverines counter-punched with three-straight goals to lead 10-7. Back-to-back goals by Bolinda brought the hosts back within a goal (10-9) entering the final quarter of play.

Grove City put the game away over the final 15 minutes. The Wolverines scored six times in the final quarter to pull away for the conference victory. Stewart and Kloehn scored for the Presidents in the final quarter.

Both teams finished with 29 shots in the game. Grove City held a 20-16 advantage in ground balls. The Presidents outpaced the Wolverines by a 16-13 margin in draw controls.

W&J travels to Thiel for a league game on Wednesday (March 25) with a 4 p.m. start time.
