GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College women's lacrosse team (3-3, 1-1) trounced the Thiel Tomcats (0-7, 0-2) by a score of 19-0 in their first conference matchup of the week.
The Presidents were led by freshman
Bekah Meiklejohn (Boonsboro, Md./Boonsboro) who scored a season-high four goals.
Anna Kloehn (Canton, Ohio/Jackson),
Caleigh Bogats (Oakdale, Pa./Chartiers Valley) and
Mya Bolinda (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) all had hat tricks on the afternoon. Kloehn netted her 100
th career goal during the outing.
Ella Holland (Healdsburg, Calif./Cardinal Newman) led the team in points with Meiklejohn, compiling six points on the day.
Bogats and
Sammy Hartz (Ijamsville, Md./Oakdale) led the W&J defense with two caused turnovers. Hartz also led the team in ground balls with four.
W&J jumped out rapidly in the first quarter with seven goals in the opening period. Meiklejohn got the scoring for the going for the Presidents at the 12-minute mark. Bolinda and Holland each scored two goals in the first quarter of the midweek matchup.
Byard kicked off the scoring in the second quarter, as the Presidents marched towards the 10-goal running clock mercy. Bogats and Meiklejohn netted scores in the quarter prior to the half, elevating the W&J lead to 10-0. The Presidents midfield and backline did not allow a shot to be sent in the opening 30 minutes, creating 13 turnovers with one successful Thiel clear on 12 attempts.
The Presidents remained stout defensively, maintaining the shutout in the second half. W&J additionally added four goals in the third quarter and five scores in the fourth quarter. Kloehn scored all three of her goals in the second half, claiming her 100
th career goal. Freshman
Haylee Phenneger (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) scored her second goal of the season in the fourth quarter.
W&J allowed just one shot at the end of the 60-minute contest. Both
Madison Hecker (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) and
Megan Brackney (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) split time in goal but did not face a shot on goal. Hecker was credited with her second win of the season.
The Presidents return to Alexandre Stadium for more Presidents' Athletic Conference action on Saturday (March 28). The conference clash is set for a 2:00 p.m. start.
