Men’s Tennis Continues Strong Conference Start with Win Against Waynesburg

WAYNESBURG, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College men's tennis team (2-7, 2-0) picked up the team's second win in as many matches with a 6-1 win over the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets (2-4, 1-1).
 
W&J swept the doubles matches to take an early 1-0 lead going into singles play. Senior captains Nate Clarke (New Kensington, Pa./Valley) and Alex Duing (South Park, Pa./South Park) won a close 6-3 set at No. 1 doubles. Juniors Jacob Bennett (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington Central) and Nick Bussard (New Kensington, Pa./Valley) secured the point with a 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles. Finally, senior captain Jackson Akers (Logan, W. Va./Logan) and freshman Colby Peters (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock Township) rounded out the doubles sweep with a 6-3 win at the No. 3 spot.
 
The Presidents took this momentum into singles play. Peters secured a 6-2, 6-0 win at the No. 5 position to get W&J on a path to victory. Duing earned a straightforward 6-4, 6-2 win at the No. 3 position.
 
W&J battled through close three-set matches to round out their overall points. Bennett took the win at No. 1 singles with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 scoreline. Clarke gave the Presidents some insurance points with a 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles. Senior Mitch Kenney (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) rounded out the scoring for the Presidents with a 6-3, 6-7 (3), 6-3 win.
 
The Presidents return home to the Janet Swanson Tennis Center for a PAC clash with the Westminster Titans for the team's senior recognition match. The ceremony will begin prior to the doubles matches starting at 4:00 p.m.
