Men’s Tennis Extends Unbeaten Conference Start on Senior Night

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College men's tennis team (3-7, 3-0) extended their unbeaten conference start to three matches after a 5-2 win over the Westminster Titans (3-3, 3-1) on senior recognition night.

The Presidents honored five seniors including Jackson Akers (Logan, W. Va./Logan), Nate Clarke (New Kensington, Pa./Valley), Alex Duing (South Park, Pa./South Park), Mitch Kenney (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) and Connor Simms (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan).

The Presidents picked up right where they left off from last match by sweeping the doubles point for the second consecutive match. Freshman Colby Peters (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock Township) and senior captain Akers started off the day with a 6-0 win at No. 3 doubles. Senior captains Clarke and Duing clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win at the No. 1 position. Finally, juniors Jacob Bennett (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington Central) and Nick Bussard (New Kensington, Pa./Valley) rounded out the sweep with a tight 6-4 win at No. 3 doubles.

Clarke got the second point for W&J with a straightforward 6-1, 6-1 win at the No. 4 position. The Titans got two points back to tie up the overall dual at two, but the Presidents kept fighting. Bussard got the lead back for W&J with a 6-4, 6-3 win at the No. 6 position, and Peters clinched the overall win with a 7-5, 6-3 victory at No. 5 singles. Akers battled for an insurance point by forcing a final set tiebreaker and claiming the No. 2 singles match 6-7(9), 6-4, 1-0 (5).

W&J returns to the Janet Swanson Tennis Center on Wednesday (April 1) for a 5:00 p.m. clash with the Thiel Tomcats.
