WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College men's lacrosse team (4-6) bested the visiting Augustana Vikings (3-7) in a nonconference weekend clash, 12-8.
Ryan Mey (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette),
Braydon Reighard (Oakdale, Pa./South Fayette) and
William Fenimore (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) each finished the day with a hat trick. Mey led the team in points with six and three assists.
Braden Petrarco (Irwin, Pa./Norwin),
Olin Putz (Rochester, Mich./Stoney Creek) and
Dylan Batche (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) each contributed a goal each.
Jack Dufalla (Washington, Pa./Trinity) finished the day with five caused turnovers, followed by Petrarco and
Aaron Alfer (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) with three caused turnovers. Mey led the team in ground balls with six while Petrarco scooped up four.
Both units battled to a 2-2 stalemate after the first quarter of action. After the Vikings kicked off the scoring, W&J scored its first goal of the contest at the 11:17 mark off the stick of Batche from
AJ Cruz (Waldorf, Md./Westlake). Fenimore scored under two minutes left in the opening quarter to equalize the score at two off a pass from Petrarco.
The W&J offense broke out in the second quarter, outscoring the Vikings 5-1 in the period. Reighard scored a hat trick in the quarter after scoring the first three goals of the quarter for the Red & Black. Mey and Fenimore added markers with under two minutes to play as the Presidents marched to halftime with a 7-3 lead.
The Presidents came out of the break productive offensively, scoring three consecutive goals to start the second half. Petrarco scored a man-up goal after Mey netted the first score of the half. Putz, a long pole defender, scored his first goal of the season on a heave from beyond the midfield line to put W&J up 10-5 at the end of the third.
Despite being outscored 3-2 in the final quarter, the Presidents were able to work their way to a 12-8 nonconference victory. Fenimore and Mey scored goals for the team in the final 15 minutes.
Stephen Moschetta (Washington, Pa./Trinity) had 12 saves in 60 minutes in goal en route to his fourth victory of the season.
W&J men's lacrosse returns to Presidents' Athletic Conference action on Wednesday (April 1) for a road meeting with the Thiel Tomcats. Opening faceoff is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start.
