NEW CASTLE, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College baseball team (20-5, 10-2) picked up another Presidents' Athletic Conference sweep in a Saturday doubleheader with the Hiram Terriers (8-16, 5-7). The Presidents rolled to an 11-5 game one victory before working a 10-0 mercy-rule shutout victory in game two.
Game One - W&J 11, Hiram 5
The Presidents got the bats churning early and often in the opener, led by
Keegan Carr (Irwin, Pa./Norwin / Indiana University of Pennsylvania) and
Andrew Miko (Portage, Pa./Portage). Carr had a game-high four hits, going 4-for-5 with one RBI and a double. Miko went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a double.
Jack Anderson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) also had two RBIs, bashing his third homer of the season.
The Presidents opened the high-scoring affair with a three-run first inning. An error from the left fielder scored two runs on a would-be sacrifice flyout from
Zac Stern (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour). Directly after, junior
Carl Wagner (Honey Brook, Pa./Westtown School) hit a deep sac fly to score Mike from third to go up 3-0.
Despite surrendering one run in the top of the third, the Presidents regained the differential and more with a two-run single from Miko in the bottom of the fifth.
W&J flirted with a game one mercy-rule victory in the sixth inning, scoring five runs in the frame. Anderson's two-run jack capped the run as the Presidents went up 10-2. Despite a ninth inning homer from the Terriers, the Presidents managed to finish the final inning with a 11-5 win.
Anthony Pass (Clinton, Pa./West Allegheny) picked up his sixth victory of the season, fanning seven batters in 6.2 innings.
Jake Stiehl (Reston, Va./South Lakes) pitched the remaining 2.1 innings and had two punchouts.
Game Two - W&J 10, Hiram 0 (7 Inn.)
Miko led the second game offensively, going 2-for-3 with five RBIs and one home run. Dezenzo led the team in hits, going 3-for-5 with one RBI.
Jackson Stocker (Canonsburg, Pa./Peters Township),
Luke Alvarez (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward),
Seth Rosenfeld (Ellicott City, Md./Long Reach) and Anderson all additionally drove in one run.
W&J got out of the gates fast again in the nightcap, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning. An RBI groundout off the bat of Miko scored the first run of the game. Alvarez ripped a hot shot through the left side of the infield to score the second run of the opening inning, 2-0.
The Presidents replicated the efforts from the opening inning in the bottom of the second, scoring off an RBI groundout and a single, 4-0.
The Red & Black blew the game open in the bottom of the fourth, beginning with an RBI single from Dezenzo to score Platt from second. Miko followed the it up with his third homer of the season batters later, driving in three to put the Presidents up 8-0.
A Rosenfeld sac fly in the bottom of the sixth and a Stocker RBI single gave the Presidents the 10 runs needed to reach the seven inning mercy-rule.
Brendan Cruz (Carnegie, Pa./Chartiers Valley) picked up the complete game shutout in game two. The junior pitched all 7.0 innings and fanned seven Hiram batters. Cruz also only gave up three hits and two walks.
The Presidents will manage a quick turnaround this weekend, traveling to ranked Mount Union on Sunday (April 12) for a single nine-inning game. First pitch in Alliance is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start.
