NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College women's lacrosse team (6-5, 4-2) posted a dominant 16-8 road win over the host Westminster College Titans (7-6, 4-2) in Presidents' Athletic Conference play Saturday afternoon.
Four Presidents registered hat tricks in the well-balanced offensive attack. A pair of seniors,
Brynne Stewart (Painesville, Ohio/Andrews Osborne Academy) and
Mya Bolinda (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills), led the way with five-point efforts, as they both scored three goals and added a pair of assists. Stewart added five draw controls and four ground balls.
Freshman
Bekah Meiklejohn (Boonsboro, Md./Boonsboro) added three goals while senior
Caleigh Bogats (Oakdale, Pa./Chartiers Valley) filled the stat sheet with three goals, two draw controls, two ground balls and two caused turnovers. Bogats surpassed 200 career draw controls during Saturday's contest. Junior
Ella Holland (Healdsburg, Calif./Cardinal Newman) had a game-high five ground balls to help in the midfield. Sophomore goalkeeper
Madison Hecker (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) registered seven saves over her 60 minutes in goal.
The first quarter was all Presidents. After the Titans opened the scoring with an early goal, the Presidents responded with seven consecutive goals. Meiklejohn put the Presidents on the board at the 13:10 mark to start the string. Meiklejohn and Bogats accounted for each of the first four scores. Holland, Stewart and freshman
Haylee Phenneger (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) tacked on a score each to finish out the first quarter efforts with the Red and Black leading by a 7-1 score.
Kloehn and Meiklejohn scored during a relatively low-scoring second quarter. The Presidents stretched the lead to 9-2 at halftime.
Bolinda scored all three of her goals during the third quarter. Her goal at the 1:07 mark extended the lead into double digits, 14-4, at the end of the frame.
Stewart and Bolinda both found the back of the net during the final quarter to help the Presidents secure an important conference win.
W&J held team advantages in shots (32-21), shots on goal (19-14), ground balls (23-13), draw controls (14-10) and caused turnovers (9-7).
The Presidents return to action on Wednesday (April 15) when they host Saint Vincent for a conference match at 7 p.m.
