WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College women's lacrosse team (10-5) bested the No. 6 seed Saint Vincent Bearcats (8-7) by a 21-4 verdict in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Quarterfinals.
Bekah Meiklejohn (Boonsboro, Md./Boonsboro) led the team in goals with five on the night with two assists.
Mya Bolinda (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) posted a four-goal night with one assist and five draw controls.
Brynne Stewart (Painesville, Ohio/Andrews Osborne Academy),
Avery Byard (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) and
Ella Holland (Healdsburg, Calif./Cardinal Newman) all additionally had hat tricks on the day.
Bogats led the team in ground balls with four.
Josie Ungaro (Oreland, Pa./Upper Dublin) and
Haylee Phenneger (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) each caused two turnovers on the night.
Both units got out to a slow start offensively, seeing W&J score the first goals of the quarterfinal matchup. Stewart, Byard and Bogats all scored in the period, 3-0.
W&J grew an 8-0 advantage before the Bearcats tallied their first goals on the night. After surrendering two consecutive goals from Saint Vincent, W&J responded with four goals before the close of the first half, 12-2. Bogats and Meiklejohn closed the quarter with unassisted goals.
The Presidents cruised through the third quarter, outscoring the Bearcats by a 5-0 margin to progress their lead to 17-2. Each of the Presidents' seven-point performers, Holland and Meiklejohn opened the quarter with power play goals in the third.
Bolinda led the Presidents in the fourth quarter with a two-goal period en route to the 21-4 final decision. Meiklejohn and Stewart also added scores to ensure the W&J victory.
W&J held large differentials in shots (38-12), ground balls (23-14) and draw controls (19-7).
With the victory over the Bearcats, W&J women's lacrosse now moves on to the PAC Semifinals to face the No. 2 seed Chatham Cougars. Action at UPMC Graham Field in Pittsburgh on Thursday (April 30) is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start time.
