MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – Four Washington & Jefferson College Track & Field members earned individual conference titles in their respective events following the Presidents' Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships opening day. The two Presidents' teams finished day one in third place.
The distance runners led the W&J women's team on day one of the championships. The Red & Black finished on the top two steps of the podium in the 3000-meter steeplechase. Senior
Chloe LoCastro (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) set a new personal best to win the event with a time of 11:20.04. Junior
Genevieve Ruth (Brecksville, Ohio/Brecksville Broadview Heights) finished right behind LoCastro with a time of 11:47.20 to pick up an additional eight points for the Presidents.
Senior
Claire Anderson (Jamestown, Pa./Jamestown) also finished on the podium's top step in the 10,000-meter run. Anderson set a new facility record with a time of 35:52.65.
In the field, freshman
Ella Neil (California, Pa./California Area) brought home a fifth-place finish in her first outdoor championships with a best jump of 10.32 meters (33' 10.25"). Junior
Katie Kovalchick (Shelocta, Pa./Indiana Area) also picked up important points for W&J with a seventh-place finish in the javelin. Kovalchick finished with a best throw of 34.33 meters (112' 7").
In the sprints, senior
Sarah Schneider (Warren, Ohio/Lordstown) enters tomorrow's final in the 100-meter hurdles as the top qualifier with a time of 14.94.
The men's team also finished with two individual conference champions after the first day. Freshman
Griffin Burnett (Pittsburgh, Pa./South Park) finished his first outdoor championships with a personal best of 56.44 meters (185' 2") to win the javelin throw. Junior
Dominic Flitcraft (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) claimed the first-place position in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 31:24.56.
Freshman
Jacob Derry (Canonsburg, Pa./Corry Area) also picked up an additional two points for W&J in the 10,000-meter run with a seventh-place finish and a time of 33:17.55. Additionally, classmate
Christian Ross (Coal Center, Pa./California Area) brought home a fourth-place finish in the javelin with a best throw of 50.71 meters (166' 4").
In the 100-meter dash prelims, senior captain
Anthony Cestaro III (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers) qualified for tomorrow's finals with the fourth-best time of 10.80.
The Red & Black will look to pick up where they leave off on the final day of the PAC Outdoor Championships tomorrow (May 1). The first events will begin at 10:00 a.m.
