Baseball Rebounds in Mercy-Rule Victory Over Oberlin, 16-5

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College baseball team (18-5) scored13 unanswered runs to get back in the win column with a 16-5 win over the Oberlin Yeomen (13-10-1).

Reigning National Hitter of the Week Josh Dezenzo (Alliance, Ohio/Marlington) led the Presidents' offense, going perfect from the plate. The senior hit 3-for-3 on the day, scoring three runs and driving in another three. Dezenzo has recorded at least one home run in four straight home games for W&J. Freshman Jackson Stocker (Canonsburg, Pa./Peters Township) went 3-for-4 at the plate and recorded his first collegiate home run. Stocker drove in three runs, scored two himself, and drew a walk.

The two teams traded runs to start the contest, with the score being tied 2-2 after the opening two innings of play. Sophomore Keegan Carr (Irwin, Pa./Norwin / Indiana University of Pennsylvania) drew a walk as the first W&J batter of the contest, and smart base running put him on third. Dezenzo hit a sacrifice fly to center field, which scored the run. In the following inning, Stocker hit a long ball out to center to keep the contest tied.

W&J got their first lead of the contest when Stocker cleared the bases again following a Dezenzo double. The Yeoman responded with three runs of their own to regain a 5-3 lead.

The Red & Black found their offensive stride when the team brought home 13 runs in the closing three innings. Carr doubled to score junior Teddy Platt (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township). Dezenzo followed it up with a single to score Carr and tie the game, 5-5 in the bottom of the fourth.

An efficient fifth inning saw 10 runs across the plate from only seven hits. Seven different batters recorded singles in the inning. Additionally, the Presidents forced three walks and forced two pitching changes during the inning. Platt and freshman Anthony Smith (Allison Park, Pa./Deer Lakes) each recorded two hits in the inning.

Dezenzo sent a long ball over the left center wall to close out the scoring as the Presidents trotted to the 16-5 victory.

Junior Bobby Budacki (New Brighton, Pa./New Brighton Area) got the start for W&J, pitching 3.2 innings. Budacki recorded four strikeouts and threw 61 pitches. Freshman Jonah Meyer (Centreville, Va./Westfield) recorded his first collegiate win and pitched 1.1 innings. Meyer only gave up two hits during the outing. Junior CJ Leuch (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) and senior Ben Pierce (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll) each pitched one inning in relief as well.

The Presidents return to Ross Memorial Park on Saturday (April 11) for a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader against the Hiram Terriers. First pitch in game one is slated for 1:00 p.m.
