Field Hockey Drops Season Opener to Juniata

HUNTINGDON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College field hockey team (0-1) dropped the season opener 6-1 to the Juniata Eagles (1-0).

The Eagles got on the scoresheet early, picking up the opening goal in the first minute of play. W&J set up a quality chance in response when a shot by senior captain Megan Brackney (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) forced a last-ditch defensive save by the Eagles to keep the game from being tied.

Juniata found another goal in the second quarter to take a 2-0 lead into the locker room for the halftime break.

The Eagles broke the game open in the third quarter, but W&J did not go away. Junior Jessica Nakanishi (Susanville, Calif./Lassen) opened her season tally following a goal off a penalty corner. Sophomore Bella Updyke (Canonsburg, Pa./Peters Township) recorded her first collegiate point with an assist on the goal.

Senior captain Grace Erhard (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) made 13 saves throughout the contest in goal for the Red & Black.

W&J returns to action on Tuesday (Sept. 8) when they travel to take on the Kenyon Owls. Opening faceoff from Gambier, Ohio is slated for 4:30 p.m.
