MARIETTA, Ohio – The Washington & Jefferson College women's soccer team (0-1) fell in the season opener to the Marietta Pioneers (1-0) by a 2-0 scoreline.
The Presidents' offense got off to a fast start as the team had two corner kicks in the opening 17 minutes. Senior captain
Maura Heberle (Georgetown, Pa./South Side Beaver) had two shots during the span. Junior
Madison Rose (Butler, Pa./Butler) also picked up a shot in the 25
th minute to keep the W&J offense going.
Marietta found their offensive footing towards the end of the opening 45 minutes, but the Presidents' defense held strong to deny all five of Marietta's shots and go into the locker room scoreless.
The Pioneers came out in the second half and found their way through the W&J back line by scoring two goals in the span of four minutes. The Red & Black did not go away though. Freshman
Zailey Tillar (Annapolis, Md./Key School) got an offensive chance and Heberle forced two additional saves. Ultimately, the Marietta defense, led by their reigning conference Goaltender of the Year, held the Presidents at bay.
Senior
Molly Schoch (Burgettstown, Pa./Burgettstown) made six saves in goal for the Red & Black. Schoch played all 90 minutes.
W&J returns to the pitch when they travel into the city and take on the Carlow Celtics. Kickoff on Friday (Sept. 4) from FNB Stadium is slated for 5:00 p.m.
